LED Lighting: The Future Is NOW

Apr 28, 2015

LED stands for light-emitting diode, which is a semiconductor device that emits visible light when an electric current passes through it. These kinds of light bulbs can be used in almost all common household fixtures and come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. Due to their flexibility and efficiency, LED bulbs are now the most exciting technical advancement in the lighting industry and are quickly becoming the household lighting option of choice. Take a closer look at the benefits of LED lighting with David VanderBleek of Tri-City Electric Co.

Energy efficiency

LED bulbs save energy by emitting light in a single, specific direction, whereas other bulbs waste energy by emitting lighting in all directions, making them one of today’s most energy-efficient lighting technologies. They use less wattage than incandescent or fluorescent lights, consuming up to 90 percent less power than incandescent bulbs.

“It’s less wattage for brighter light,” said VanderBleek. “And, they’re ‘instant-on’—you don’t have to wait for them to fire up like you sometimes see in parking lots or warehouses.”

Time efficiency

VanderBleek also praised LEDs for their long life, something that can save you tons of time when it comes to searching for and replacing light bulbs in your home. LED bulbs have an outstanding lifetime expectancy of up to 100,000 hours of burn time per bulb—that’s almost 11 years of continuous, uninterrupted operation (or 22 years of 50 percent operation)!

Flexibility

LED bulbs are made without fragile components like glass and filaments, making them extremely durable and able to withstand even the roughest conditions. Because LED bulbs are built to handle extreme external impacts, such as shock, wind, rain and heat, they are great for outdoor and public lighting systems, as well as great commercial or residential indoor lighting solutions.

“The colors are getting better, too,” added Vanderbleek. “They’re coming in more appealing hues and giving off warmer light.”

With LED technology rapidly advancing, you can find LED bulbs for almost any lighting need.

Cost efficiency

“LED bulbs absolutely pay for themselves,” praised Vanderbleek. “They might be more expensive to purchase up front, but they are so much less expensive to operate.”

LED bulbs allow you to save money with the simple twist of the wrist. Because they’re extremely energy-efficient and long-lasting, they can dramatically decrease your energy bills and labor costs.

Plus, Vanderbleek pointed out that by making energy-efficient improvements to your home—like switching your home over to LED lighting—you may be eligible for energy rebates or federal tax credits. Visit energystar.gov or contact your local energy company to find out what rebates you may be eligible for today!

According to Vanderbleek, LED is the lighting of the future, and it’s not hard to see why.

“LED is ultimately going to win,” said Vanderbleek confidently. “It just gets better and better all the time.”

Get ahead of the game, and update the lighting in your home to LED bulbs to take advantage of their efficiency. You can keep replacement costs low by only replacing two or three bulbs in your home each month.
